Bellingham and Whatcom County sure are growing fast. We all here lots of talk of the Californians coming. It looks like most of the growth is coming from closer to home.
According today’s Bellingham Herald “3,553 people moved from Skagit County to Whatcom County between 2000 and 2005, according to Internal Revenue Service data. The data, which counted people who filed federal tax returns, was recently compiled by The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer, which shared the information with other McClatchy newspapers. By far, most people who moved to Whatcom County in that period came from not far south, from more urbanized Puget Sound areas such as King County. About half the people who moved here came from somewhere in Washington. About one in 10 came from California.
About 41,500 people came to Whatcom County, and 34,600 people left, between 2000 and 2005, for a net addition of about 6,900 people, according to the data. The county had 166,800 people in 2000, according to the U.S. Census. ”
