Don’t miss Bellingham Technical College’s 15th Annual Welding Rodeo 2016 & Skills Competition on Friday and Saturday, May 14 and 15, 2016.

The theme for this year’s Welding Rodeo is “Mythical Creatures”.

The BTC Welding Rodeo is a fundraiser, a competition, an industry trade show as well as a community event.

Each 4 member team has 8 hours to build and complete it’s sculpture from nothing but scrap material,

Judges will look at each piece for artistic aesthetics, safety for public display, and quality.

Amateur prizes will include Trophies and a $200 prize. Professional’s can win $16,00, $1,200, & $1,000

Get out to the BTC campus Friday and Saturday to see welding and art in action up close and personal. You can even bid on one of the sculptures. All sculptures will be available at a public auction, with the proceeds benefiting the BTC Welding Student Scholarship Fund, and to support the event. Silent auction for amateur sculptures closes at 5 p.m. Friday. Live auction for professional sculptures will be at the end of Saturdays competition

Fairhaven’s Holiday Port Festival and Gingerbread House Contest.

Fairhaven’s annual Holiday Port Festival and Gingerbread House Contest takes place this year December 4 -5

The Port of Bellingham’s big community event is the Holiday Port Festival at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal. As usual there will b performances by local bands, singers and dancers. There are always lots of free family activities, including horse-drawn wagon rides, kid’s art activities, free gingerbread cookies and cider, you can also bring non-perishable items to donate to the food bank. I hear Santa Claus may even pay a visit.

The Gingerbread House Contest is always fun and it will be interesting to see this years entries.

Gingerbread Homes are open for public viewing all 3 days of the Festival. There are 9 categories and ribbons are awarded to top 3 in each.

Appliance Art Revival

Come out and see the soap box derby style race of odd vehicles made of old, used appliances. Racers heading down the hill in souped up, converted, decked out, art mobiles.
It’s the Appliance Depot’s 4th annual Appliance Art Revival, happening June 2,

The revival focuses on art and draws attention to the company’s mission, which is to keep our community healthy and to model environmental sustainability by reducing the number of appliances entering the waste stream. And it’s about putting fun into recycling.

You can get a close up look at the unique derby cars from 10am-3pm Sat., June 2
during the Bellingham Farmers Market at the Depot Market Square.

The race is at 5pm on Maple Street and State Street. Art Auction, music and fun to follow at the Boundary Bay Brewery.
