Bellingham’s Katie’s Cupcakes battled against three other bakeries to win Cupcake Wars on the seventh season’s premiere of the Food Network’s
Cupcake Wars is a reality TV show where bakers from around theUS face bake off for judges. Katie Swanson, the owner of Katie’s Cupcakes, and her assistant Kelsey Shafer won the $10,000 prize.
“It was really fun getting to be on TV and that whole experience. I’ve never done anything like that before,” Katie said.
They made the show by entering a creative video.
Katie and her husband Neal said the show was recorded long ago that its been difficult for them to keep it a secret.
Katie and Shafer can’t really prepare for the competition because the ingredients and tasks are not known until the judges give the challenges on air seconds before having to compete. Making three cupcakes in 75 minutes was the most challenging part of the competition. They made banana with an orange cream-cheese frosting and apricot filling, next was a vanilla bean with white chocolate cream cheese and coconut macadamia nut filling and last was a chocolate chip and brown sugar.
The $10,000 prize is being put toward pursuing Katie and Neal’s dreams of expanding the brand into children’s T-shirts and a children’s picture book.
