Bellingham named among cities with the cleanest air
Yea, we have the cleanest air. Bellingham is one of the two cities in Washington (the Spokane area is the other) that got a perfect score for being among the least ozone-polluted (smoggy) city in America. This is according to the American Lung Association’s annual “State of the Air” survey, meaning they didn’t report any ozone readings in the “unhealthy” range. We are breathing the cleanest air.
This is a far cry from Bellingham of the past that Baby Boomer will remember, one of the rotten-egg smell of the Georgia-Pacific pulp mill, occasional aromas from the chlorine plant, and maybe memories of a sooty cement plant just north of town.
The report by the Lung Association is a good news-bad new.s document. Ozone pollution is down.
Yet, according to the clean air group, 44 percent of Americans still are living in areas with dangerous levels of ozone pollution.
Bellingham is now a great place to breathe.
