New Years Day for the brave of heart get out for a quick cold dip at the Lake Padden Resolution Run & Polar Bear Plunge. The run or walk starts at 11 am and the plunge is scheduled for noon. Lifeguards will be at the lake, as well as hot beverages, snacks and warm showers for those brave souls who make the plunge.
If your up in the north county you can take your plunge at the 30th Annual Birch Bay Polar Bear Plunge where hundreds of people come from all over the Pacific Northwest for this annual tradition! Participants come from as far away as Europe and Japan, Chicago, Detroit and of course, British Columbia to plunge in to the bay’s chilly water.

The two annual Whatcom County opportunities to get into the water on New Year’s Day with your Polar Bear buddies are at Lake Padden Park and at Birch Bay.
New Year’s Day at Lake Padden, starts with The Resolution Walk at 11 a.m. sharp, walk or run around the lake, followed by the polar bear plunge into the lake at high noon. Hot beverages, warm showers and snacks are available for all participants.
The Birch Bay Polar Bear Plunge started in 1982 by local residents, the annual ritual draws hundreds of participants and onlookers each year. The Polar Bear Plunge has becoming a destination spot, participants come from as far away as Germany, Tokyo, Chicago, and British Columbia to plunge in to the bay’s chilly water.

There are five judging categories with prizes for:
1. Most Years Plunging
2. Oldest Participant
3. Best Individual Costume
4. Best Group Costume
5. Farthest Traveled Participant
