Martin Luther King Day celebration – 365 Things To Do In Bellingham, WA – Day 194

MLK Day of Service

Whatcom hosts its 2nd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, along with Bellingham Technical College, honoring Dr. King by putting his teachings of unity and social justice into practice through community service.

Students from WCC and BTC will join together on this national day of service to work on various projects throughout our community at organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Northwest Youth Services, and the American Museum of Radio and Electricity.

Another service project is being organized by Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association and the City of Bellingham Parks Volunteer Program on Monday, January 17th from 10am to 1pm at a work party to remove non-native and invasive plant species. Then plant new trees and shrubs, spread mulch, and maintain the restoration site along Whatcom Creek at Red Tail Reach. This site is located just behind Iowa St between Meador St. and Racine St. in Bellingham. Parking will be available in the Geri Fields parking lot located near the corner of Puget St. and Fraser St. Follow the signs and the trail and check in at the blue NSEA tent.

Village Books in Fairhaven will be hosting a read-infrom 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 17. Children ages 3 to 8 will listen to Western students read books about diversity and civility.

A book drive for local elementary schools is also a part of the event, and will continue on at the Western AS Bookstore until the end of the month. Books can be donated through a designated donation box located near customer service in the AS Bookstore.

Poetry Reading and Open Mic

The Community Food Co-op will host its 13th annual Poetry Reading and Open Mic at 6 p.m. inside the downtown Food Co-op store on 1220 N. Forest St.

The event is open to anyone who would like to read or listen to poetry and songs about human rights, diversity and other related topics.

Celebrate Bellingham– 365 Things To Do In Bellingham, WA – Day 188

The city’s Annual Celebrate Bellingham! events this year are happening the next three days: December 30 and 31, 2010, and January 1, 2011.

The event is sponsored by the City of Bellingham Parks & Recreation Department and the Sportsplex.

Celebrate Bellingham! features indoor and outdoor events and entertainment and they are all free activities. The events on Thursday and Friday include indoor ice skating, horse-drawn wagon rides and indoor swimming, and a family fun night is scheduled 6-9 p.m., Friday at the Sportsplex, with carnival games, inflatable play equipment, live entertainment and more. New Year’s Day 2011, Saturday includes a fun run/walk around Lake Padden, and a polar dip in the lake for all those brave enough. Warm showers and goodies will be available for all served under patio heaters.

Highland Heights Park Renovation to begin in March

Highland Heights Park on Vining Street is getting an upgrade with new playground equipment and other improvements, according to Bellingham’s Parks and Recreation Department.

The playground which was built in the early 1970’s, doesn’t comply with current safety and accessibility standards. The new equipment to be installed includes a swing, slides, climbers, a spring toy and a spinning toy as well as restriping the basketball court and adding a new picnic table, park benches, and a wheelchair-accessible path to Illinois Lane.

The Alabama Hill Neighborhood Association began the effort for renovating the park in 2007.

The neighborhood feels lucky the project is happening and didn’t get the ax due to budget restraints.
