The Whatcom Falls Neighborhood
The Whatcom Falls Neighborhood takes its name from the beautiful park that is a major part of the neighborhood. This awesome park in the middle of town is definitely one of Bellingham’s natural wonders, most of the park is a natural forest sorrounding Whatcom Creek. The park actually has 3 waterfalls to enjoy, there is a great view of the main falls from an old sandstone bridge. The park has lots of trails, tennis courts, a playground, picnic area, and a fish hatchery that is run by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The neighborhood also includes Bayview Cemetery which adjoins the park and the residential area south of Lakeway. Most of the homes sit on nice size lots of about 1/4 acre. There is only one commercial are with a mini-mart and gas pumps, a beauty salon and the famous Lefeen’s donut shop in addition to some office space. There are some new developments going in in the southern part of the neighborhood.
Bloedel-Donovan Park is very close to the neighborhood. The City and County have worked together to preserve 60 acres for a future park and trailhead development at the end of Birch Street, in the south end of the neighborhood known as “Lookout Mountain.”
